Notes | The Council of Milan writes to Eusebius of their intention to send two bishops who will inform him of the council’s proceedings. |
The Council of Milan to brother Eusebius: Greetings in the Lord!
We are not ignorant of your priceless love; how precious are the bonds of love and peace, dearly-beloved brother!
And since the divine commands of the Lord have taught those of us who lead the catholic church to preserve this bond, we reached the completely holy and just decision to send to you our fellow-bishops, Eustomium and Germinium. We have met with them at the Council, and they will travel to your Grace that they might thoroughly lay open and explain all the things which transpired. Thus, your exposition of faith may be joined together with ours, and the resulting harmony which is pleasing to God and conducive to unity may be embraced.
And so, your sincerest Prudence, with your best interest in mind, we especially urge the following: Listen to the aforementioned men, and after you have spoken with them, give their position your support, for nearly the whole world has declared Marcellus and Photinus heretics, likewise the sacrilege of Athanasius. Thus, you will appear more ready to go along with truth than with what is disputed.
There are many things inappropriate for us to write in this letter. Indeed, those whom we have sent to you, they themselves will rightly describe what we need not divulge by letter.
If, however, your Grace thinks that some things ought to be done differently than we wished, make it known to us according to proper church protocol, as the Christian practice dictates. Afterwards, may you not blame us for having retained infinite patience. We have been entreating our aforementioned brothers that they might come to you.
