John Chrysostom (c. 347-407) is remembered for his exceptional preaching, a talent which earned him the name “Chrysostom,” which means “the golden mouth.” Born in Syrian Antioch, Chrysostom pursued the life of a hermit for several years before realizing his health could not sustain that lifestyle. Returning to his birthplace, he became a deacon in AD 381 and a priest in 386. During the ensuing years he preached in Antioch, until he was elected Bishop of Constantinople in 398.

His direct style of preaching against the affluence and worldliness of Constantinople quickly earned him many enemies, not least in the imperial court itself. When the Tall Brothers (a group of Egyptian monks exiled for their support of Origen) sought refuge with him, it provided his enemies with an opportunity to destroy him.  At the Synod of the Oak (AD 403) he was deposed and exiled. Although he was almost immediately recalled by the emperor, he soon was deposed and exiled to the Caucasus, dying in exile in 407.

The preserved corpus of Chrysostom is perhaps the largest of any Greek church father (taking up 18 volumes in Migne’s Patrologia Graeca). This includes hundreds of sermons, addresses, tracts, and letters. He is still numbered among the four doctors of the Eastern Church.

The following chart is an attempt to list all of the genuine extant works of John Chrysostom in approximate chronological order. It is based primarily on the CPG but also considers more recent Chrysostom scholarship, especially that of highly respected Chrysostom scholar Wendy Mayer, who provides extensive and invaluable Chrysostom references on the Centre for Early Christian Studies website. The majority of the dates provided here reflect those that have been put forth by J.N.D. Kelly in his biography of John Chrysostom. The dates for the letters listed under CPG 4405 reflect those that have been proposed by Roland Delmaire. The order for those letters has been taken from Wendy Mayer’s chart in Collecting Christian Letters. Any dates which come from other sources are marked by parentheses, and the source is indicated on the work’s subpage. It should be noted, however, that Wendy Mayer casts considerable doubt on the certainty of the present dating of much of John’s corpus.

The English title column presents either a translation of the Latin title or the most commonly used title for that work by English-speaking Chrysostom scholars. The Latin titles and the majority of the incipits come directly from CPG. The incipits for the corpus of John’s letters listed under CPG 4405 have been taken from PG. The incipits for works which include multiple homilies have been taken from the first homily from PG.

The links on the English titles will take you to a subpage for each individual work. These pages contain more information on the work, such as references for the work, alternate suggested dates, and information on Greek editions, ancient versions, and modern translations.
