For just as everything made by the Father has been made through the Word, so also the things spoken by the Father are declared through the Word. And for this reason the most holy Moses here calls the Word an angel (Ex 3:2), for he appeared for no other reason than to announce to Moses what he knew was beneficial for the children of Israel. Now he knew it was beneficial to think that there is one God, and therefore he said to him, “I am the one who is” (Ex 3:14) to teach that there is no other God besides him. This is easily understood, I believe, by those whose thinking is right, with the help of a small, humble, every-day example. For it is not possible for a man’s word to be distinguished from him with respect to some power or hypostasis, for a man and his word are one and the same because the word is not distinguished with respect to anything other than just the effected activity.
