GLT – Dr. Glen L. Thompson began the fourthcentury.com website in 2008 while he was Professor of History at Wisconsin Lutheran College (Milwaukee, WI) from 2002-2012. He continued to direct the site from Hong Kong where he was Professor of New Testament and Historical Theology at Asia Lutheran Seminary until his retirement in 2020. He has an M. Div. degree from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Ancient History from Columbia University. He is a member of the North American Patristics Society, the Evangelical Theological Society’s Patristics Study Group, and the Society of Biblical Literature. His research centers on the fourth-century church in Rome. Comments and corrections can be sent him at glen.thompson@wlc.edu.

Site Designer:

Jonathan Polfer, from Big Rock IL, is a 2007 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College. He majored in theology, with minors in computer science and mathematics. As the initial site designer, he developed the original format and appearance of the website. Our website is dedicated to his memory.

Project Contributors:

AGC – Austin G. Claflin, from Sturgeon Bay, WI, is a student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary and has worked with Dr. Thompson since 2021. He has primarily worked to create the webpage Ancient Descriptions of the Council of Nicaea. 

AMJ – Aaron M. Jensen, from Ixonia, WI, a graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, was Dr. Thompson’s research assistant from 2012-2015. He is responsible for the completion and revision of the translations of the fragments of Marcellus of Ancyra and the Jaffe-Kaltenbrunner Register of the Fourth Century Popes, as well as the translations of the Julius falsae, the listing of the Works of Constantine, and the listing and translation of the writings of Apollinaris of Laodicea and his followers.

AJW – Aaron J. West (Project Coordinator June 2007- August 2008) has a M.Div. degree from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. He is responsible for the following: Athanasius, Alexander, Hilary’s Works, The Collectio Avellana, Imperial Laws and Letters excluding CT 16, EOMIA, and Jerome’s Translations of Scripture. He translated several documents as well.

BR – Brandon Rogers translated Marcellus Fragments 76-96 for a winter-quarter independent study while a student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

DN – Daniel Noonan is from Dousman, Wisconsin. He graduated Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2007 as a mathematics major . Under the supervision of Dr. Thompson, he translated fragments of Marcellus of Ancyra’ during the 2006-2007 school year.

ES – Erin Smolinski (Webmaster, January – May 2009) is a graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College in elementary education.

GAD – Gregory A. Dickenson, worked on the website while a student at Wisconsin Lutheran College. He graduated in 2009 with a B.A. in political science. Greg produced a chronological list of laws relating to religion in the fourth century, based on the Theodosian Code, book 16.

JAB – Julius A. Buelow (Research Assistant August 2013 – 2014), from Carthage MO, holds a B.A. Degree from Martin Luther College and a M. Div. from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. He also completed a year of study at the Lutherisches Theologisches Seminar in Leipzig, Germany. His projects included working with Dr. Thompson on a synopsis of the fourth century histories of Theodoret, Sozomen, and Socrates.

JCB – Jacob C. Behnken (Project Coordinator August 2008-2010) was Dr. Thompson’s research assistant for several years while completing his M.Div. at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary (2012). Jacob is from Brookings, South Dakota and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Martin Luther College.

JDZ – Jesse Denzin-Weber graduated from WLC in 2007 with a double major in both history and English. He compiled the list of Jerome’s letters and other works with Dr. Thompson during the 2006-2007 school year.

JJW – Jacob J. Werre (Webmaster May 2012 – May 2015) is from Viola, WI. He graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2015 with a degree in Communicative Arts and History. He initially was webmaster, but beginning in August of 2013 served as co-webmaster and student project manager. His contributions include the revision and extension of several brief biographies of fourth century writers, the updating of the Arius map page, and general guidance of the website as a whole.

JRZ – Jeremy R. Zima (Project Coordinator 2006-2007) graduated from WLC in 2007 with a music major, with emphases in guitar performance and music history. As project coordinator, he edited much of the original content on this site, handled the administrative duties, and co-authored presentations about the website with Dr. Thompson at both the ETS and SBL national conferences. He created the Persecution Timeline, Eusebius’ Works Page, Arian Map, Athanasius Werke, Tetrarchy Table and Tetrarchy Chronology pages.

KDH – Kevin Douglas Hill is a PhD student at Durham University. His thesis is on the role of the Holy Spirit in deification according to Athanasius of Alexandria, and his research interests focus on Pneumatology, soteriology, and spirituality in the Greek Patristic tradition.

LS – Luke Stellick (Webmaster 2020-2022) is from Geneva, IL. As a student at Wisconsin Lutheran College he majored in history with a minor in theology.

LSS – Lane Stuart Schultz served as the the WLC history department’s  research assistant during the fall semester of the 2008-2009 school year.

LT – Luke Thompson was a student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary when he revised the translation of Chrysostom’s Commentary on Galatians 6. He holds a B.A. from Wisconsin Lutheran College, an M.A. in Philosophy from Marquette University, and a M. Div. from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

MJB – Michael J. Birnie allowed us to post his English translation of the Church of the East’s councils of 410, 420 and 424 (part of his unpublished translation of the entire Synodicon Orientale).  He has served since 1969 as pastor of St. Thomas’ Parish (Seattle, Washington), affiliated with the Chaldean Catholic Church.

MKM – Molly K. Miller (Webmaster, August-December 2008) is from Rochester, Minnesota. She earned an A.S. degree at Rochester Community and Technical College before enrolling at WLC. She continued on to Winona State University in Minnesota.

MS – Marta Stahlfeld (Webmaster, August 2013-May 2016) is from Seattle, WA. She graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College with a degree in History and English. Her contributions include brief biographies of several fourth-century writers.

NJ – Nathanael J. Jensen from Ixonia WI, is a graduate of Martin Luther College and a current student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. He has worked as Dr. Thompson’s research assistant from August of 2015 until July of 2019. Nathanael’s contributions include updating the page on Early Egyptian Monasticism, compiling the chart and information on the genuine extant works of John Chrysostom, and assisting with the research and development of pages on the Early Church Historians. He is also responsible for the translation of the Anonymous Church History, Book1 and the first draft of Book 2.

OT – Orie J. Thomford (Research Assistant, 2017-2018) is from Chesaning MI. He is a graduate of Martin Luther College and and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Orie contributed the home pages for Socrates ScholasticusSozomen,  and Theodoret, and did much of the work on A Harmony of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret.

PSAM – Peter S.A. Metzger (2010-2011 Research Assistant) from Gladwin MI, worked on the site while a student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.  He holds a B.A. degree from Martin Luther College and has sinced earned his M. Div. from WLS.  Peter contributed to the encyclopedic list of Councils and Creeds and translated a number of the Marcellus of Ancyra Fragments.

RMS – Rachael M. Schuman is from Paris, Illinois. She graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2008 with a B.A. in communication and an art minor. She compiled information on Egyptian Monasticism focusing mostly on the Pachomian Rule.

RR – Robert Read (Research Assistant September 2020 – present) holds his B.A. from Martin Luther College and is currently a Middler at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary pursuing his M.Div. He has worked on the translations of several documents pertaining to the Christological controversies as well as polishing Nathanael Jensen’s draft translation of book 2 of the Anonymous Church History and translating book 3 from scratch.

SCD – Stanley C. Draper (Research Assistant, 2018-2020) is from Dallas TX. He is a student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. He graduated from Martin Luther College with a B.A. degree. Stanley has worked on A Harmony of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret and the list of Early Christian Councils.

SM – Sarah Molkentin (Undergraduate Research Assistant, 2009) graduated from WLC in 2009 with a B.A. in English.

SMT – Shannon M. Turner (Webmaster August 2009-May 2012) is from West Bend, WI. She graduated in 2012 with a B.A. in history from WLC; she went on to earn her Ph.D. in the medieval history program at The Ohio State University. Her contributions to the website include a list of Syriac authorsconciliar creeds of the fourth century, and documents concerning the Melitian schism, as well as brief biographies of several fourth century writers.
