Acta Conciliorum Oecumenicorum
E. Schwartz produced the Acta conciliorum oecumenicorum (The Acts of the Ecumenical Councils) from 1914 to 1940. Since then, his volumes have provided the scholarly community an edition of the original texts (both Greek and early Latin translations) from and relating to the ecumenical councils. (Note that no Acta remain from the first two ecumenical councils, Nicaea and Constantinople.) In 1971, J. Straub continued this monumental project, and a second series was begun in the 1980s to deal with later councils, beginning after Tome 4 of the first series. While the scope of these volumes fall outside the fourth century, we include them here because these texts often cite fourth-century sources.
Please note: The Acta conciliorum oecumenicorum is arranged by series, tome, volume, and part. Dates following each volume list the publication date(s) for the respective volume. The complete contents of Tome 1 and Tome 2 are now available. In addition, much of the indexes that comprise Tome 4 and Volume 3 are available in limited full text from Google Books (see links below).

Tome 2: Council of Chalcedon (AD 451)
The documents compiled for the Council of Chalcedon are divided into 6 volumes. It is important to note that volumes 1 and 3 both contain the official “Acts” or proceedings of the council, but volume 1 contains the Greek version while volume 3 contains the Latin version. There are several differences between the numbering of these two collections; the most significant is that the proceedings for October 10th are Act 3 in the Greek version and Act 2 in the Latin, and the proceedings for October 13th are vice versa. For more information, please read our page on the Council of Chalcedon.
